What to Do in the World of Jewelry Making by Corrine Evans
One of the best ways to find out how to make jewelry is to ask people who make it. Jewelry makers have been making hand-crafted items for centuries, so you are not alone if you’re interested in learning how to make jewelry. And what better way to learn than from someone who makes it herself? The craft of jewelry-making is often a time-honored tradition passed down through generations, a process that requires design, material and skill. Hand-made, one-off jewelry pieces forge sentimental sentiment and style into an individual, unique DIY treasure which has a story to tell as well.
As mentioned above, starting with the basics-the fundamentals-of jewelry-making is perhaps the most essential reading material you’ll need to understand your craft. This jewelry for beginners guide is going to show you how to make sturdy, practical jewelry that you can wear and appreciate for many years to come, right from the comfort of your own home. This is a big project for anyone, so it’s not something to undertake lightly, but I promise you, after reading this, you’ll be in a better place to tackle your first few creations. This is a fun, quick, and easy to read, written by Corrine Sundberg, who is known for her practical, down-to-earth approach to creating beautiful, stylish jewelry. If you like free tips on crafts, this one is for you.
I have to say, I was very surprised by how much information there is about jewelry making. There is a lot to consider, both material and skill level, but this book covers everything, from how to select beads, metal, colors, to which types of wood, cloth, plastic, etc. will best complement your home’s decor. There are also resources for finding the best beads at discount prices, and resources to help you figure out what kind of jewelry making tools you will need as well. By the time you’ve finished reading this, you’ll be ready to take your first steps into a new jewelry business.
I would have liked to have seen more pages devoted to price point options for making jewelry. This is an important factor in any jewelry production venture, because your price point will dictate the amount of profit you can make, as well as the amount of risk you face. It’s good to touch on all these topics, but the short, succinct sections on price point and skill level choices could have been more descriptive and perhaps had a glossary of terms that would have been helpful.
On the flip side, Corrine Sundberg does not gloss over the purchase, sale, and shipping of fine jewelry. She provides step by step directions on how to do each of these three things. You can also purchase or learn how to make jewelry online. As mentioned, it is good to touch on these topics, but there is room for instruction as well. That is where I think the e-book “Learn How To Make Jewelry” from Shopify really shines. Between the clear instructions, pictures, and clear explanations, I was able to do what I needed to know with just a few clicks of the mouse.
On the topic of instruction, Corrine has several chapters on that as well. She divides the chapters into “the tools of the trade”, “the supplies of the trade”, and “metal clay”. I really like how she breaks down these subjects, because it makes it easy for a novice crafter to understand how to get started. In particular, the chapters on how to get started with jewelry making wire sculptures are excellent. The “how-to videos” within the e-book cover all the bases, from using clasps and lettering to buying supplies. After just a short period of time using the information provided in the e-book, I was sold on the idea of making my own jewelry.
Another great way to get started is through Instagram, and Corrine has a lot of Instagram tutorials available. I followed several of them before getting started. As I mentioned, all of her Instagram tutorials were crystal clear and easy to follow. It made it easy for me to add the pictures of the items that I was making to my Instagram account. I have personally made several wire sculptures using the Instagram photo tool, and they turned out beautifully.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading What to Do in the World of Jewelry Making. The steps to take to start a jewelry business are simple and easy to understand. Corrine also lays out the fundamentals of jewelry making and how to get started with your first piece. If you are wanting to create a large jewelry business, it is a good idea to consider buying What to Do in the World of Jewelry Making. You will not regret it.
