Arthur (Artie) Fortunoff, the son of a Russian immigrant who built a multimillion-dollar jewelry empire, died on Wednesday at his home in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 84.
The cause was complications of a stroke, his son Kenneth said.
With his wife, Roz, Mr. Fortunoff started selling watches and jewelry out of a small store in Brooklyn in 1922. They moved to Westbury, on Long Island, in 1953 and opened a store there.
In the 1970s, the company began to expand, opening stores in Garden City, N.Y., and then in White Plains, Danbury, Conn., and other locations. It also began to sell furniture and home accessories.
The company was sold in 1988 to the May Department Stores Company, which was later acquired by Federated Department Stores. In 1999, the Fortunoffs sold their remaining interest in the company.
Arthur Fortunoff was born on June 21, 1924, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the son of Max and Sarah Fortunoff. His father, who had emigrated from Russia, started a small jewelry business, making repairs and selling watches on the street.
Arthur Fortunoff served in the Army in Europe during World War II, and after the war he attended the University of Miami, graduating in 1948.
He is survived by his wife, Roz; his son, Kenneth; his daughter, Ellen Fortunoff-Simon; and six grandchildren.
