Helene Fortunoff Who Built Jewelry Dies

at Age 92

Helene Fortunoff, a Holocaust survivor who built a multimillion-dollar jewelry business, died on Saturday at her home in Greenwich, Conn. She was 92.

The cause was complications of a stroke, her son, Kenneth, said.

In the early 1950s, Mrs. Fortunoff, her husband, Max, and their young son, Alan, emigrated from Belgium to the United States.

With a $5,000 loan from her father-in-law, Mrs. Fortunoff started making and selling costume jewelry from their home in Brooklyn.

The business took off, and in 1957 the family moved to Westchester County, where they opened a store in White Plains.

In the early 1960s, they opened a store in Garden City, on Long Island.

By the late 1970s, the Fortunoffs had built a multimillion-dollar business, with stores in 10 states.
